Contemporary Mosque Interior in MBR City, Dubai

Flared white palm-form columns rise to a fibre-optic starlit ceiling and a carved walnut calligraphy medallion, backlit square-Kufic panels lining the piers, an arched mihrab set in geometric girih screenwork above a teal prayer carpet — a contemporary mosque conceptualized for MBR City in marble, walnut and light, with a marble ablution hall alongside.

MBR City, the central masterplan of Dubai, sets the ground for a mosque ALGEDRA has conceptualized in a contemporary Islamic register. White stone, Canaletto walnut, marble and layered light carry the prayer hall and ablution areas, the design drawing on the date palm, calligraphy and geometric girih as its vocabulary.

The prayer hall opens beneath a canopy of columns. Flared white columns rise and spread like date palms into the ceiling, a fibre-optic starlit field scattered across the soffit between them, a carved walnut calligraphy medallion set at the centre. A teal prayer carpet runs the floor in directional bands toward the qibla, tall windows framing palm and desert views along the flanks.

The qibla wall carries the focus. An arched mihrab niche sits within a geometric girih screen of perforated stone, backlit from behind, a walnut mashrabiya grille filling the arch, a square-Kufic calligraphy cartouche rising above it. A white stone ablution fountain stands before the wall, vertical light slots flanking the niche.

The piers carry the calligraphy. Backlit square-Kufic panels run down the columns and reveals, their geometric lettering glowing against the pale stone, recessed cove light tracing the arches and the flared capitals.

The entrance lobby welcomes worshippers. An amber cluster chandelier falls through the volume, an Ayat al-Kursi calligraphy sculpture set on the wall, a digital prayer-times board marking Fajr through Isha beside an arched walnut door framed in geometric mashrabiya. Backlit square-Kufic panels line the grey walls, a stair rising to the upper level.

The ablution hall completes the plan. The word al-wudu glows in brushed gold on a walnut ceiling disc, vertical LED-lit marble strips alternating with grey stone across the walls, grey marble wudu seats with brass trim and under-glow lining the room. Wall-mounted taps, product niches and a round marble floor inlay carry the washing ritual, walnut cabinetry banking the stations.

White stone, walnut, marble and calligraphy give the mosque its character, the palm-form columns and starlit ceiling carrying the contemporary Islamic register, the girih screens and square-Kufic panels supplying the ornament, the teal carpet grounding the hall. The result reads as one serene, light-filled mosque — rooted in Islamic tradition, contemporary in material, and composed for prayer from the starlit ceiling to the marble ablution hall.
